Video Streaming Platform Nebula is now available on Android TV

Nebula is a video streaming platform similar to YouTube that was started by a YouTuber to help creators be less reliant on YouTube’s unpredictable algorithms. Gosh, that’s a lot of YouTube in one sentence! Nebula essentially allows creators to post videos on its platform that may not be fit for posting on YouTube or videos that a creator may not want to post on YouTube due to several reasons. This can be experimental content, content with copyrighted material, or something different from the usual genre a creator is known for.

If you follow your favorite creators on Nebula and have been watching videos on the platform, you will now be able to do so on a much larger screen. The Nebula app for Android TV is now available to download from the Play Store. Nebula announced (as spotted by Rene Ritchiethat its app is finally available on Android TV so those who wish to stream content via the platform can now get the app.

The way Nebula is different from YouTube is creators don’t have to worry about a dip in views or revenue when posting content on the platform that’s a little different from the usual set of videos they upload. In fact, the way monetization works on Nebula is entirely different from YouTube. Unlike YouTube that pays creators based on the number of views their videos have got, Nebula pays based on the time spent by viewers watching a creator’s videos. The revenue, which is essentially 50% of the subscription fees to the platform, is divided proportionally based on the watch time of each creator.

That way, the higher the duration viewers watch your videos for, the higher you’re going to get paid as a creator. Nebula is a subscription-based service that costs $5 per month and has more than 200,000 subscribers from across the world. Schlage announces smart lock with Apple Home Key support

Schlage has announced a new smart lock that comes with Apple Home Key support. The Cupertino giant first introduced the feature in iOS 15 — which allows users to store digital house keys in their Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch. When you want to control your lock, you only have to tap your device on it. The technology uses NFC and is similar to Apple’s Car Key feature. It’s also worth mentioning that Home Key works for an additional five hours or so after your device’s battery dies — thanks to Power Reserve mode.

The Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt was virtually announced at CES 2022. The new lock works with both the Schlage mobile app and Apple HomeKit. You can use either one or both simultaneously to take advantage of everything it has to offer. Both methods allow remote control, but you’d need an Apple Hub — such as a HomePod — if you’re not using the Schlage app. What makes this Schlage lock so special is it being the first in North America to support Apple Home Key. The company highlights some of its features:

  • Homeowners will enjoy being able to check the status of their deadbolt and lock/unlock the deadbolt remotely from their phone.
  • Homeowners can create and manage up to 100 access codes from the app, as well as set schedules for those codes for recurring, temporary or permanent access.
  • Real-time activity logs make it easier to know when a code has been used, and customizable push notifications provide an added layer of security and peace of mind.
  • Pairing the Schlage Encode Plus deadbolt with the Schlage Home app allows homeowners to use Alexa or Google Assistant to securely control their lock via voice.
  • The Schlage Encode Plus deadbolt is compatible with iOS and Android devices via the Schlage Home app.

It’s also worth noting that the lock supports the traditional, physical key. So you could always depend on that as a last resort option. Based on the features you use, the battery of this lock could last you anywhere between four months and a year. If you’d like to get your hands on it, you will have to wait till next Spring and put aside $299, though.

iQOO announced its latest pair of flagship phones in China that succeed the iQOO 7 series from last year. Both the iQOO 9 and iQOO 9 Pro come with Qualcomm’s latest mobile platform — Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. There are a few differences between the two phones though in the rest of the specifications and features. The standard iQOO 9 features a 6.78-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. One of the unique aspects of this panel is that it can achieve a peak brightness of 1500 nits. You can choose between 8/12GB of RAM coupled with 256/512GB of onboard storage.

The rear of the phone houses a 50MP f/1.75 primary camera with OIS accompanied by a 13MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP telephoto lens with 2X optical zoom capabilities. One of the major highlights of the iQOO 9 is the 120W fast charging onboard that can reportedly juice up the 4,700mAh cell in under 19 minutes. The iQOO 9 uses Vivo’s OriginOS based on top of Android 12.

While the chipset running the show is the same on both devices, the iQOO 9 Pro gets more premium features compared to the standard version in the form of a 6.78-inch QHD+ display which is now an LTPO panel. Apart from the 4,700mAh battery and 120W fast charging, the iQOO 9 Pro also gets 50W wireless charging support making it a true flagship offering. The primary camera on the rear is the same 50MP shooter but the ultra-wide camera has received an upgrade to a 50MP sensor. The 2X telephoto lens has also been upgraded to 2.5X with a 16MP unit. Unsurprisingly, the iQOO 9 Pro also runs on OriginOS based on top of Android 12.

The iQOO 9 and iQOO 9 Pro will currently be available only in China from 12 January, but the device should make its way to other shores in the near future. The standard iQOO 9 will be available in three color variants — Black, Orange, and a White version with BMW stripes. 8GB of RAM with 256GB of storage is what you’ll get on the base variant for RMB 3,999 ($630/₹47,000). The price goes all the way up to RMB 4,799 ($750/₹56,000) for the top-end variant with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

The iQOO 9 Pro forgoes the black variant and is available only in two colors — Orange and White with BMW stripes. Even the iQOO 9 Pro has the same RAM and storage configuration as the iQOO 9 on the base variant — 8GB + 256GB — and starts at RMB 4,999 ($785/₹58,000). The top-end variant with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage will cost you RMB 5,999 ($940/₹70,000).

Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 promises better upload performance and improved efficiency

At CES 2022, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced Wi-Fi 6 Release 2, an update to the Wi-Fi 6 standard. The latest release brings several improvements including faster uplink performance, improved power efficiency, and more.

First and foremost, Wi-Fi Certified 6 Release 2 offers greater uplink capacity. It adds support for uplink multi-user MIMO, allowing multiple devices to upload content concurrently to an access point (AP). Uplink multi-user MIMO support enables faster upload speeds and reduces latency for gaming, video conferencing, and IoT devices. In addition, the release also adds new high-speed channels in the 6 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi 6E, unlocking an even faster and more reliable Wi-Fi experience.

“Wi-Fi delivers advanced capabilities that have driven tremendous global innovation, paving the way for massive growth in Wi-Fi applications that users rely on every day. Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6 Release 2 furthers Wi-Fi’s evolution to address today’s market needs, and supports more high-performance Wi-Fi scenarios with greater capacity, efficiency, and reliability,” said Edgar Figueroa, president, and CEO, Wi-Fi Alliance.

Another area of focus is power management. The latest release includes some new power and sleep mode enhancements such as broadcast target wake time (TWT), extended sleep time, and dynamic multi-user spatial multiplexing power save (SMPS). These enhancements will allow devices in Wi-Fi Certified 6 Release 6 networks to receive extended sleep periods, specific wake up times for transmitting data, and allow dynamic shut off of redundant chains for improved power efficiency.

New features introduced in Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 will work across all three bands — 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz — supported by the Wi-Fi 6 standard. The new release comes as the adoption of Wi-Fi 6 continues to grow by leaps and bounds. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, nearly 2 billion Wi-Fi 6 devices are set to enter the market in 2022.

Major industry players such as Broadcom, Intel, Qualcomm, NXP, and onsemi have already pledged support for the new release. First devices supporting Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 are expected to arrive in the first half of 2022.

Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge with 120W fast charging support launched in India

The past few months in India have been rather quiet with respect to phone launches. The Redmi Note 11T did make its way to India at the end of 2021 but there was nothing really special about it. However, that’s changing now with the launch of the Xiaomi 11i and Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge.

Xiaomi reintroduced its ‘i’ series of phones in India with the Mi 10i at the beginning of last year, which offered 5G support and a 108MP camera. Continuing that tradition of introducing new innovations in this series, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge is the first phone to come with 120W fast charging in India. It’s accompanied by the more affordable Xiaomi 11i that also charges pretty fast at 67W. Here are all the details about the two devices.

If you went through the specifications of both phones, you would realize that the only difference between the Xiaomi 11i and the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge is in terms of battery and charging. The standard Xiaomi 11i has a larger 5,160mAh battery with 67W fast charging support. But, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge takes it up a notch with 120W fast charging. The battery capacity has been reduced slightly on the HyperCharge variant, though, and you get a 4,500mAh unit. Given the extremely fast charging, the smaller battery size shouldn’t matter too much. After all, Xiaomi claims that you can charge the phone completely from 0-100% in just 15 minutes which is insane.

Apart from that, both phones share the exact same specifications throughout. Under the hood, there’s a MediaTek Dimensity 920 SoC based on the 6nm manufacturing node. It is a mid-range SoC that should ensure great performance on the device. Of course, you also get 5G connectivity with 8 5G bands. The base variant of both devices gets 6GB of RAM along with 128GB of internal storage. The storage can be expanded via a hybrid slot, which means you can either use two SIM cards or a SIM and a micro SD card.

Another highlight of the Xiaomi 11i and 11i HyperCharge is the 108MP primary camera. Of course, Xiaomi has used this sensor on a lot of its phones already so it isn’t something new. But it ensures that the phones are well-rounded in all aspects from performance to cameras to charging. An aspect where Xiaomi has been doing really well on all its upper mid-range devices is the display. The Xiaomi 11i and 11i HyperCharge don’t disappoint in this regard either. The phones get a 6.67-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and HDR10 support.

The phones adopt flat sides along the edges reminiscent of the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 design. The frame is made of polycarbonate while the back is glass. Xiaomi has opted for a nice-looking design for the Xiaomi 11i series and the color options complement it well. For those wondering, both the 67W charger for the Xiaomi 11i and the 120W charger for the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge are provided within the box itself.

The Xiaomi 11 and the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge will be available in 5 color variants – Pacific Pearl, Stealth Black, Camo Green, Purple Mist and will be available starting from 12 January 2022. The Xiaomi 11i starts at ₹24,999 for the base variant while the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge starts at ₹26,999. The higher RAM variants are priced at ₹26,999 and ₹28,999, respectively. You will be able to purchase the phones from Flipkart, Mi.com, Mi Home Stores, and official retail partners.

Google brings back Cast volume controls for Pixel phones with January 2022 update

With Android 12, Google quietly removed one important feature: the ability to control the volume of Cast-enabled devices using your phone’s volume buttons. On Android 11 and earlier versions you could change the volume of an ongoing Cast session by simply pressing the volume buttons from any screen. But that convenience is gone in the latest version of Android — you now have to open the relevant app to adjust the volume. Earlier in November Google said it had to temporarily disable the feature due to a legal issue and that it would bring it back in Android 12L. But it appears we won’t have to wait till the next Android release to get the feature back.

As spotted by Mishaal Rahman, Google has seemingly re-enabled Cast volume controls for Pixel phones running Android 12 with the January 2022 security update. That means you can once again control the volume of your Cast session using the volume keys from any screen.

As you can see in the screenshot above, when you’re streaming something to a Cast-enabled device, pressing the volume key will bring up the familiar Cast volume slider.

It’s unclear whether Cast volume controls will make their way to other Android 12 devices anytime soon. For now, it seems the feature is only coming to Pixel phones running Android 12. The January 2022 update was released earlier this week and is currently rolling out to the Pixel 3, Pixel 4, and Pixel 5 series. Meanwhile, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will get it sometime later this month.

Samsung joins the Home Connectivity Alliance to promote interoperability and drive innovation

Interoperability, or lack thereof, is one of the most important factors you need to consider while purchasing smart home devices from different manufacturers. Since OEMs have different standards in place for their smart home products, you need to make sure that the devices you purchase are compatible with each other. This could prove to be a bit overwhelming for those who are new to the smart home scene. In an attempt to address this issue, Samsung and a few other manufacturers have set up the Home Connectivity Alliance.

According to its website, the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) aims to provide consumers with more options within a safe, secure, and interoperable connected home ecosystem. It has three main goals:

  • Provide consumers with more convenience and options through interoperability. Remove “walled garden.”
  • Protect consumer data privacy, reduce additional points of failure, and provide uncompromised safety.
  • Drive innovation through collaboration with Government agencies and other trade alliances, and foster innovation in the connected home space through competition.

During its CES 2022 keynote, Samsung said that as part of the HCA it plans to work with other member companies to develop shared guidelines for cloud-to-cloud interoperability while taking data security and consumer safety requirements into account.

Talking about Samsung’s commitment towards the HCA, Chanwoo Park, EVP and Head of IoT Business Group at Samsung Electronics, said, “As digital technology becomes more embedded in everyday life, we at Samsung believe that it’s essential to bring greater openness to our smart home ecosystem and empower consumers with more options to create truly personalized home experiences. We are excited to work with other members of the HCA and will work to make home lifestyles easier and smarter with meaningful innovations in smart appliances and connectivity.”

In essence, this means that Samsung’s smart home products will soon work seamlessly with products from other manufacturers, like Arçelik A.Ş., The Electrolux Group, Haier, GE Appliances, and Trane Technologies. Consumers will be able to access products from these manufacturers through Samsung’s SmartThings platform and they will also have the option to access Samsung’s smart home products through apps from other HCA members.

Sony’s 2022 Bravia XR TV lineup includes new Mini LED TVs and the world’s first QD-OLED 4K TV

Sony is one of the biggest TV manufacturers out there and at CES 2022, the Japanese giant is taking the opportunity to showcase a new lineup of Mini LED and OLED TVs. Sony’s 2022 Bravia XR lineup sees the company finally jumping the Mini LED TV bandwagon with the Master series Z9K and X95K series while also introducing one of the first QD-OLED TVs.

Starting with the X95K and Z9K series, these are Sony’s first Mini LED TVs. The Z9K series offers 8K resolution in 75-inch and 85-inch sizes while the X95K delivers 4K in 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch sizes. TVs come equipped with the new Bravia XR Processor which uses Sony’s in-house local dimming algorithm to control thousands of Mini LEDs, delivering increased brightness, high dynamic range, deep blacks, and vivid colors. Sony says its Mini LEDs don’t suffer from blooming — a common effect on Mini LEDs in which there’s a visible halo around bright highlights on a black background. Sony says its XR Backlight Master Drive algorithms ensure there’s almost no flare or halo around highlights. The Mini LEDs offer variable refresh rates up to 120Hz for smooth visuals and deliver exceptional sound thanks to the company’s Acoustic Multi-Audio system. Both the X95K and Z9K series run Google TV out of the box.

Sony has also announced the world’s first QD-OLED TV called the Bravia XR A95K. While Sony’s current OLED TVs use panels from LG Display, the new A95K model features a display made by Samsung Display. QD-OLED (quantum dot organic light emitting diode) is a hybrid display technology that combines the best of OLED and QLED. This allows QD-OLED to achieve deep black levels, vibrant colors, and higher brightness output compared to existing OLED panels. Similar to Mini LEDs, the A95K QD-OLED also supports variable refresh rate (VRR), content upscaling up to 4K, and runs Google TV out-of-the-box. The TV comes with a unique stand that lets the user mount the TV in the “front position” for the most immersive experience and “back position” which lets you set the TV close to a wall.

Finally, Sony has also refreshed the entry-level OLED lineup with the introduction of the A90K and A80K lineups. The A90K series comes in 42-inch and 48-inch sizes while the A80K line will be available in 55-inch, 65-inch, and 77-inch sizes.

Sony hasn’t detailed the exact pricing and availability of the 2022 Bravia XR TVs.

Samsung’s YouMake Project aims to take product customization to the next level

During its CES 2022 keynote, Samsung unveiled a host of new products, including the Samsung Freestyle projector, a new range of Micro LED, Mini LED, and Lifestyle TVs, and several new 4K monitors. In addition, the company announced the YouMake Project at the event, which will give consumers the option to personalize all products from the company from one central location.

In a press release highlighting the YouMake Project, Samsung notes that it empowers consumers to “choose and customize products based on what matters most to them, so they can enjoy a more personalized experience across devices.” The initiative takes Samsung’s Bespoke vision to the next level and will give buyers the option to customize everything from home appliances to smartphones and other products from the company.

During the keynote, Samsung said that the YouMake Project will launch on its website later this month, giving users a chance to personalize their Samsung smartphones, TVs, refrigerators, wearables, and more. The project’s website also includes a virtual showroom that helps users experience customized products before purchase.

It’s worth noting that Samsung has offered customization options for home appliances under the Bespoke banner for a while now. The company recently expanded the Bespoke range to include the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Watch 4. The YouMake project aims to take things a step further and include all the other products from the company. At the moment, we’re not sure whether Samsung plans to merge its Bespoke range with the YouMake Project or not. However, that seems unlikely as Samsung also showcased a couple of new Bespoke products during the keynote, including Bespoke options for the Family Hub, French 3-Door and 4-Door refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges and over-the-range microwaves, Jet vacuum, and Washer and Dryer.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride Vision System will help guide self-driving cars

Qualcomm’s push into automotive wouldn’t be complete without a chipset dedicated to self-driving cars. The company’s Snapdragon Ride Vision System is an all-new software stack from Arriver paired with a 4nm SoC. It’s designed for an optimized implementation of front and surround cameras for automated driving (AD) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Qualcomm is confident that this system is “one of the industry’s most scalable and open” systems when it comes to AD and ADAS. The company says that its flexible deployment options allow “for a common implementation of features and requirements, with functional safety/SOTIF support, across virtually all vehicle tiers and types”. Qualcomm has been working on both AD and ADAS for a while now, with the company first announcing its entrance to the space at CES in 2020.

The Snapdragon Ride Vision System can detect static road geometry such as lane markers and guard rails, dynamic objects such as vehicles, and pedestrians and cyclists. It also has traffic sign recognition for global regulatory requirements. Custom neural network architectures for the chipset’s enhanced perception is based on 8MP wide field of view cameras.

As Qualcomm puts it, it’s an open and customizable system, so car manufacturers will be able to chop and change it to fit their own needs. Qualcomm also says that it supports Over-the-Air (OTA) updates for ongoing feature enhancements.

“As we further collaborate with the automakers and Tier 1 suppliers, our latest Snapdragon Ride Vision System aims to address a growing need for a more open, adaptable and scalable platform for computer vision solutions,” said Nakul Duggal, senior vice president and GM, automotive, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Snapdragon Ride focuses on the extensive automated driving needs of our customers, ranging from scalable SoCs to integrated AD stacks and development platforms, and tools, that provide a comprehensive solution for L2-L3 automated driving, while maintain the flexibility to accommodate automakers and Tier-1 suppliers to bring their preferred solutions.  The Snapdragon Ride Vision System can offer automakers the opportunity to customize more advanced driving experiences for every vehicle class.”

The Snapdragon Ride Vision System is expected to be available in vehicle production in 2024. Qualcomm has also announced that it is working with Renault Group on some connected car features with a “Digital Chassis” package of software and hardware developed by Qualcomm.

Samsung Freestyle is a projector with the software of a smart TV

There has been an ever-growing number of smart projectors over the past few years, which combine a standard wall projector with a built-in media system (usually some variation of Android). Anker has a few of them under its Nebula brand, and the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector is another example. Samsung is now entering that market with the ‘Samsung Freestyle,’ one of the company’s major announcements at CES 2022.

Samsung says the Freestyle is “a projector, smart speaker and ambient lighting device all rolled into one lightweight, portable device.” It weighs 830 grams (1.82 pounds/29.2 ounces), and has a unique rotating case that allows it to rotate 180 degrees. Samsung says it can be powered with a standard USB-PD connection, as long as 50W/20V charging (or higher) is supported by the adapter or battery. There does not appear to be any internal battery, unlike most of the Nebula smart projectors sold by Anker — the Freestyle is definitely intended to be used indoors near a power source.

The rotating design allows it to switch between projecting on walls and ceilings without being propped up by other objects. Like most smart projectors, it supports auto keystone, so it can detect the angle of the projection surface and adjust the picture as needed to prevent distortion. Samsung says it can project images up to 100 inches in size, but there’s no mention of the brightness level, which is usually where projectors this small fall short — brighter images require larger (and heavier) lamps.

The software experience should be roughly identical to what you would find on Samsung’s smart TVs, with built-in streaming apps and casting/mirror functionality for Android and iOS devices. It also has far-field microphones, so the Freestyle’s voice assistant will be able to hear people from the other side of a room. Samsung didn’t say which voice assistants would be available on the offered, but considering the software should match the company’s TVs, Bixby and Google Assistant will probably be available. A smart speaker mode is also available, as well as a mood lighting effect.

Samsung says the Freestyle will be available for pre-order later today (January 4), presumably on the company’s online store.

The OnePlus 10 Pro comes with 80W fast charging, Hasselblad cameras, OxygenOS 12, and more

The OnePlus 10 Pro‘s design was officially revealed yesterday, and today OnePlus is sharing the specifications of its upcoming flagship. While some of its specifications, like the inclusion of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, can easily be guessed, other specs like 80W fast wired charging are more of a surprise.

OnePlus has mentioned the display tech but has omitted the other useful bits of this spec. Early leaks had suggested that the OnePlus 10 Pro would be coming with a 6.7-inch QHD+ display, but there has been no confirmation from the company on this. Similarly, RAM and storage capacities have not been mentioned, but previous leaks have mentioned the usual combination of 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB. OnePlus has also not mentioned more details on the camera setup other than the megapixel values and the Hasselblad branding, so we will have to wait on that as well.

The most interesting bits here are the bumped-up fast charging. The OnePlus 9 Pro came with 65W fast charging, which could accomplish a full charge within the half-hour. The OnePlus 10 Pro is on its way to one-up that — the company hasn’t shared charging times, but 80W should ideally be even quicker than 65W. Also included is 50W wireless fast charging, which could get a full charge on the OnePlus 9 Pro in under 45 minutes. There’s bound to be proprietary charging tech involved, but OnePlus has not explicitly confirmed this. Curiously, OnePlus is using OPPO’s branding for the charging tech — the underlying tech is the same in both cases.

The latest company diving into autonomous driving is… John Deere

John Deere sells a wide variety of farming and gardening equipment, from large agricultural machinery to simple lawn mowers. The company’s tractors have gained a reputation for being famously difficult to repair by owners, but now the company is showing off a (supposedly) fully autonomous tractor at CES 2022.

The company said in a press release, “the autonomous tractor has six pairs of stereo cameras, which enables 360-degree obstacle detection and the calculation of distance. Images captured by the cameras are passed through a deep neural network that classifies each pixel in approximately 100 milliseconds and determines if the machine continues to move or stops, depending on if an obstacle is detected. The autonomous tractor is also continuously checking its position relative to a geofence, ensuring it is operating where it is supposed to, and is accurate to within less than 1 inch.”

John Deere says once the tractor is located in a field, it can be remotely started and managed. The “John Deere Operations Center Mobile” provides live video, images, data, and metrics, and machine anomalies are automatically reported to the farmer. The company says the tractor will be available to purchase “later this year.”

John Deere’s tractors are notoriously difficult to repair and manage, as the company has a history of enforcing digital rights management (DRM) on its tractor software, so that only certified John Deere dealers can diagnose and repair problems — much in the same way that Apple prevents non-certified repair shops from obtaining official support software and replacement parts for Macs, iPhones, and other Apple products. The company’s anti-consumer behavior has been criticized by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, among others. John Deere also faced a prolonged worker strike last year, in which the company tried to replace striking workers with office workers who ended up injuring themselves and crashing tractors.

ASUS ROG launches new gaming laptops and peripherals at CES 2022

The floodgates have opened and there’s a ton of announcements coming out of this year’s CES. ASUS ROG has unleashed a wealth of new gaming laptops, monitors, and more at CES 2022.

Among the many devices, there’s a new ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16, a refreshed Zephyrus G14, and the ROG Flow Z13 gaming tablet, but there’s a lot more.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16

First off, there’s the new ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 for 2022. This is a new iteration of ASUS’ dual-screen gaming laptop, with second half-height screen above the keyboard giving users additional information and controls at a glance.

But the main screen deserves plenty of attention this time, too. ASUS has co-developed a new dual-spec display in partnership with BOE, and dual-spec means it literally changes the specs of the screen depending on your needs. You can set the screen to run at Full HD resolution and 240Hz or 4K at 120Hz, but it’s the same panel. You can use the higher pixel density for productivity work and switch to the higher refresh rate for gaming, for example. You can also choose a more standard miniLED display that comes in Quad HD+ (2560 x 1600) resolution and with a 165Hz refresh rate. This panel also supports VESA DisplayHDR 1000.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 (2022)

As for what’s inside, the Zephyrus Duo 16 comes with the latest AMD Ryzen 9 6980HX processor and up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU with a whopping 150W of power, all cooled with an improved cooling solution, including a new liquid metal thermal solution.

Rounding things out, there are six stereo speakers for sound with Dolby Atmos support and Hi-Res audio. The keyboard has 1.7mm of key travel and per-key RGB lighting, and this all fits into a chassis that’s smaller than last year’s model.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14

Next up, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, which was a highly praised laptop in its first iteration, is also being refreshed for 2022. The latest model now comes with an AMD Ryzen 9 6000-series processor and AMD Radeon RX 6000S GPUs, the new graphics card designed for thin and light laptops like this. ASUS is using liquid metal to help keep these components cool and maximize performance. Having the latest AMD processors also means support for DDR5 RAM, which is included alongside up to 1TB of SSD storage.

ASUS ROG Zephyrs G14 (2022)

Similar to the Zephyrus Duo 16, the Zephyrus G14 comes with a new Nebula display, featuring Quad HD resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate with 3ms response times. On top of that, the screen has 500 nits of peak brightness and covers 100% of DCI-P3, so it’s also great to get some work done. It also supports Dolby Vision and Adaptive Sync, plus it’s Pantone-validated.

Just like previous models, the new Zephyrus G14 comes with an AniMe Matrix display on the lid, featuring 14,969 holes and 1,449 miniLEDs to create a custom pattern you can design yourself. This gives you one of the most personalized customization options you can find on a laptop.

ROG Strix SCAR and Strix G

For top-tier gaming performance, the ASUS ROG Strix line is also getting refreshed for 2022 with new ROG Strix SCAR and ROG Strix G laptops. These laptops are very similar, but there are some noteworthy differences, including the processors.

ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 (2022)

The ROG Strix SCAR comes with up to an Intel Core i9-12900H processor, while the ROG Strix G comes with up to an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX, both comparable processors from the two companies. They also both feature up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GPU with 150W of power for graphics workloads. ASUS also mentioned DDR5 RAM and PCIe Gen 4 SSD support for the Strix SCAR, but these features should also be supported on the AMD variant.

Both laptops come in either 15-inch or 17-inch variants, and the display options are similar, too. That means the 15-inch laptops let you choose between Full HD 300Hz, Quad HD 165Hz, or Quad HD 240Hz (only on the Strix SCAR) panels, while the 17-inch versions come with either Full HD 300Hz or Quad HD 240Hz displays across both models. All the displays support Dolby Vision and have a 3ms response time for quick reactions. For audio, the Strix laptops all have four stereo speakers and Dolby Atmos support, plus two-way noise canceling.

ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022)

The ASUS ROG Strix models come with a 90Wh battery and support 100W charging via USB Type-C so you can get some power back with a relatively compact charger. For use at home, you’ll still want to use the proprietary charger.

ASUS ROG Flow Z13

ASUS calls t ROG Flow Z13 the world’s most powerful gaming tablet, and we’re not going to doubt that since it’s likely the world’s only gaming tablet. However, that’s not to discredit the power packed into this device. It comes with up to an Intel Core i9-12900H CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics card, meaning it can run just about any modern game you could want right now. It also comes with LPDDR5 memory to improve overall performance. Since it’s a tablet, airflow is less likely to be obstructed when it’s resting on its kickstand, so cooling should work even better than some traditional laptops.

ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (2022)

If that’s not enough, though, the Flow Z13, just like the Flow X13 convertible, supports ASUS’s ROG XG Mobile external GPU. In fact, there’s a new model of the ASUS ROG XG Mobile being announced at CES 2022, featuring an AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT graphics card. This is an alternative to the existing model powered by an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, and both continue to be available if you want either one.

Aside from that, the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 comes with a 13-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and two configuration options available: 4K at 60Hz or Full HD at 120Hz. Both screens have 500 nits of brightness, Dolby Vision support, Adaptive Sync and Pantone Validation, but the 4K panel is rated for 85% of DCI-P3 color coverage while the Full HD panel covers 100% of sRGB.

ROG Swift monitors

For desktop gamers, ASUS also introduced a handful of new ROG monitors for 2022. First off, the new ROG Swift OLED big-format gaming displays. These monitors come in 42-inch and 48-inch options, and they include the usual benefits of OLED like a 1,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, 0.1ms response times, true blacks, and vivid colors. Plus, they cover 98% of the DCI-P3 color space and have a color accuracy of Delta E < 2. They’re also packing 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG42UQ, PG48UQ

The panels can reach up to 900 nits of peak brightness, but ASUS is using a custom cooling solution to keep things running cool even at max brightness. ASUS is also using a anti-glare texture to prevent unwanted reflections that often affect OLED panels.

The displays come with HDMI 2.1 support so you can enjoy 4K 120Hz gaming on consoles in addition to PCs, plus some HDMI 2.0 ports and DisplayPort 1.4, so you have plenty of options.

On the more traditional side of things, there’s the ROG Swit 360Hz PG27AQN monitor. This monitor is designed for e-sports players that require super-fast reaction times, hence the 360Hz refresh rate. It’s actually one of first 1440p monitors with a 360Hz refresh rate, alongside a few others NVIDIA announced today. The ROG Swift PG27AQN also supports NVIDIA Reflex to reduce system latency and improve response times even further.

ASUS says it’s using a new type of liquid crystal that enables the display to have higher response times compared to other LCD monitors. It also has a dual-layer voltage driver to move the liquid crystals around, providing a smoother and more consistent image compared to single-layer voltage panels.

Other ROG peripherals

As for the rest of the announcements, there’s quite a lot. ASUS announced the new ROG Fusion II 500 and 300 gaming headsets, featuring virtual 7.1 surround sound and Quad DAC technology. The ROG Fusion II 500 supports 3.5mm, USB Type-C, and USB Type-A connections, while the Fusion II 300 lacks a 3.5mm jack. Additionally, the Fusion II 500 has a game chat volume control, which adjusts the balance of game audio and chat while gaming. That’s not available on the 300 model, either. Both models do have RGB lighting, though.

In the keyboard department, there are the new ROG Strix Flare II and Flare Animate II. The latter is the more impressive of the two, being the first keyboard to feature the AniMe Matrix technology debuted in the Zephyrus G14 laptop. This gives you a few LEDs in the top-right corner of the keyboard which you can customize to create any pattern you can fit in that space. Aside from that, the keyboard has an 8000Hz polling rate, swappable ROG NX mechanical switches, along with a switch stabilizer to minimize key wobble. The keyboard also has per-key RGB backlighting, and the wrist rest has a diffuser that extends the lighting to the bottom of the wrist rest.

The standard Strix Flare II lacks the swappable switches, the AniMe Matrix, and the RGB light diffuser in the wrist rest, but it’s the same otherwise. Instead of the AniMe Matrix panel, you get a ROG logo that’s color customizable.

If you need a new mouse, ASUS also introduced the ROG Chakram X mouse. This mouse has a new optical sensor with a 36,000DPI and a 8000Hz polling rate for extra speed and accuracy. ASUS boasts a CPI deviation of just 1%, making it one of the most precise mice on the market.

The Chakram X mouse also has a new concave joystick on the side that’s easier to reach for additional control inputs, along with four buttons. The mouse features hot-swappable switches with three-pin mechanical and five-pin optical switches. The top cover is magnetic and can be easily removed to access the swappable switches and the storage bay for the USB RF receiver. Finally, it features a rechargeable battery via USB-C or with Qi wireless charging.

Finally, ASUS also announced a new gaming router, the ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000. ASUS says it’s the first quad-band Wi-Fi 6E router, featuring one band for 2.4GHz networks, two bands for 5GHz, and one band for the new 6GHz spectrum. It has a new Broadcom Wi-Fi chipset and CPU promising an increase of 18% in maximum throughput, and ASUS RangeBoost Plus promises up to 38% wider coverage with the Wi-Fi signal. For wired connections, the router includes two 10Gbps ports, one 2.5Gbps WAN port, and four 1Gbps ports.

ASUS didn’t say wen any of these products will be available, but we should hear more in the coming weeks and months.

As you can probably tell from looking at the spec sheet, the new TCL 30 series devices are geared towards users who just want a basic 5G capable phone. The TCL 30XE packs MediaTek’s Dimensity 700 chip, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a 4,500mAh battery. It features a 6.52-inch HD+ display which has a teardrop style notch at the top for the selfie camera, 90Hz refresh rate support, and 180Hz touch sampling rate.

In the camera department, the TCL 30XE offers a 13MP primary camera, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro camera on the back, along with an 8MP selfie shooter. As far as connectivity is concerned, the device obviously offers 5G support, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.1. Other connectivity features include a USB Type-C port (USB 2.0) and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device runs Android 11 out of the box.

The TCL 30V, on the other hand, packs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 SoC, 4GB RA, 128GB storage, and a 4,500mAh battery. It has a higher resolution 6.67-inch FHD+ display with a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera and 60Hz refresh rate support, along with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

The cameras on the TCL 30V are also a bit better than the ones found on the TCL 30XE. It has a 50MP main camera, a 5MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP macro camera on the back, along with a 16MP selfie camera over on the front. Unlike the TCL 30XE, the TCL 30V offers both sub-6 and mmWave 5G support, 802.11 ab/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.1. In addition, the phone features a USB 3.0 Type-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It too runs Android 11 out of the box.

Pricing & Availability

TCL has not shared the pricing and availability details for the new TCL 30XE and TCL 30V at the moment. But, based on the given specifications, we expect TCL to launch the devices at an affordable price point. We’ll update this post with all relevant details as soon as they’re revealed.

TCL showcases its new range of Android tablets at CES 2022

TCL has quite a wide spread of products to showcase at CES 2022. We’ve already talked about the company’s new TCL 30 series smartphones — the TCL 30XE and the TCL 30V — which offer 5G capabilities at an affordable price point. Now, let’s take a look at TCL’s new Android tablet range. The new lineup includes tablets across various price points, ranging from budget-friendly options geared towards kids to mid-range models that promise decent performance for everyday use.

The new TCL NXTPAPER 10s is an affordable Android tablet featuring a 10.1-inch FHD display, MediaTek’s Helio P22 chip, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage. It has a minimal design with slim bezels around the display and a square camera island on the back.

The tablet packs an 8MP rear-facing camera,  a 5MP selfie camera, a dual speaker setup, and an 8,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. The TCL NXTPAPER 10s comes in two models, with the base variant offering Wi-Fi connectivity and a passive stylus. The higher-end variant comes with LTE capabilities and an active stylus. The tablet runs Android 11 out of the box.

The new TCL Tab 8 4G is an entry-level tablet that packs MediaTek’s MT8766B quad-core SoC, up to 3GB RAM, and 32GB storage. It features an 8-inch IPS display with chunky bezels, a single 5MP camera on the back, and a 5MP selfie shooter.

The tablet runs Android 11 out of the box and it comes in three variants — a Wi-Fi-only model with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage, a 4G model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, and another 4G model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. All variants feature a microSD card slot for expansion up to 256GB and a 4,080mAh battery.

The TCL Tab 10L is also an entry-level Android tablet featuring a 10.1-inch display, MediaTek’s quad-core MT8167B SoC, 2GB RAM, and 32GB storage. It comes in a single Wi-Fi-only model, which packs a 2MP selfie camera, a 2MP rear-facing camera, a dual-speaker setup, and a microSD card slot for expansion up to 128GB.

Like the TCL Tab 8 4G, the larger TCL Tab 10L features a 4,080mAh battery. But since it has a larger display, it might not offer great battery life compared to the smaller 8-inch model.

Lastly, TCL’s new TKEE series features three tablets geared towards kids — the TCL TKEE Mini, the TKEE Mid, and the TEKK Max. The TKEE Mini is a very basic Android tablet that runs Android 10 (Go edition). It features a 7-inch 600p TN panel, MediaTek’s MT8167 quad-core SoC, 1GB RAM, 32GB storage, and two 2MP cameras.

The tablet packs a tiny 2,580mAh battery. The TKEE Mid is slightly larger and features an 8-inch 800p display, MediaTek’s 8766B quad-core SoC, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, and two 5MP cameras. Thanks to its larger form-factor, it packs a 4,080mAh battery. The tablet runs Android 11 out of the box.

Finally, the TKEE Max is an even larger option, featuring a 10-inch 800p IPS panel, MediaTek’s MT8167B quad-core SoC, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, and two 2MP cameras. It has a dual-speaker setup, a 4,080mAh battery, and runs Android 11 out of the box. As far as connectivity options are concerned, the Mini and Max variants come in Wi-Fi-only models, while the Mid variant offers 4G connectivity.

At the moment, TCL has not shared pricing and availability information about these new tablets. We’ll update this post with more details as soon as they become available.

TCL’s new wearable display glasses are 30% lighter than the previous model

At CES 2021, TCL first showcased a prototype unit of its wearable display glasses. The company brought these glasses to the market as the TCL NXTWEAR G in June last year. The glasses featured two 1080p Sony Micro OLED panels that emulated a massive 140-inch display, giving users a truly immersive visual experience on the go. However, they were a bit bulky for everyday use. TCL has now showcased an upgraded model, called the TCL NXTWEAR AIR, at the ongoing CES 2022 trade show, and it aims to address some of the issues with the previous model.

Like the previous model, the new TCL NXTWEAR AIR wearable display glasses feature two 1080p Micro OLED displays that emulate a 140-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 47° FoV. While TCL hasn’t changed much when it comes to the displays, the company has managed to make the glasses much more lightweight compared to the older model, which should make them a bit more usable.

TCL claims that the NXTWEAR AIR wearable display glasses are 30 percent lighter than the previous model with the standard lens. The glasses also feature a slightly updated design, and the glasses now look a lot like RayBan’s iconic Wayfarer sunglasses.

Talking about the new wearable display glasses, Stefan Streit, CMO for TCL Communications, said, “In developing the NXTWEAR AIR, we primarily focused on two areas of importance to consumers: portability and comfort. With this new generation of NXTWEAR glasses, users can enjoy the same exceptional viewing experience as before, but with even more portability, a comfortable fit and an individual style design.”

Other than the design changes, the TCL NXTWEAR AIR glasses are pretty much the same as the NXTWEAR G. They still don’t feature a built-in battery and connect to your smartphone using a USB Type-C port. TCL claims that the glasses are compatible with over a hundred smartphones and they even work with some laptops and tablets.

TCL is yet to reveal the pricing and availability details for the NXTWEAR AIR. We’ll update this post with all the missing info as soon as it’s revealed.

TCL Book 14 Go is an affordable Windows 11 laptop geared towards students

Along with two new TCL 30 series 5G smartphones and a wide range of Android tablets, TCL has unveiled its first Windows laptop at CES 2022. The new TCL Book 14 Go is an ARM-based laptop that runs Windows 11 out of the box. It features a sleek design, plenty of I/O ports, and a 14.1-inch HD display that refreshes at 60Hz. The laptop is geared towards students and it should come in at an affordable price.

The TCL Book 14 Go comes in a silver finish, which TCL calls Skywriting. It has a sleek design with a metal and plastic chassis, and a small form factor that makes it quite portable. As mentioned earlier, the TCL Book 14 Go is an ARM-based Windows laptop that packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c chip, an Adreno 618 GPU, 4GB RAM, and 128GB of onboard storage. The Realme GT 2 Pro is the showstopper here. It flaunts a 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED LTPO panel with support for an adaptive refresh rate that can go from 1Hz all the way up to 120Hz. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. The phone comes in two finishes: a textured paper-like back which is designed by Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa and AG matte glass back.

Under the hood, the Realme GT 2 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, paired with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB UFS 3.1 flash storage.

As far as camera hardware is concerned, the Realme GT 2 Pro comes with a triple camera setup on the back. You get a 50MP Sony IMX766 main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS,) flanked by a 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 150-degree field-of-view and a 2MP macro sensor.

The Realme GT 2 Pro sips its juice from a dual-cell 5,000mAh battery and supports fast charging via a 65W charger. The phone also has an improved cooling system that employs a supersized vapor chamber, a 9-layer heat dissipation structure, and a larger heat dissipation area to keep thermals in check while gaming.

In addition, the phone comes with Realme’s “Antenna Array Matrix System” which incorporates ultra-wide-band antenna-switching technology (HyperSmart), a Wi-Fi Enhancer, and 360° NFC for more reliable Wi-Fi and NFC performance.

Other notable highlights of the Realme GT 2 Pro include dual stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos support, Bluetooth 5.2, and an in-display fingerprint reader. On the software side, the phone runs the latest Realme UI 3.0 with Android 12 out-of-the-box.

The vanilla Realme GT 2 sports a slightly inferior 6.62-inch FHD+ 120Hz AMOLED display and swaps out the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for the Snapdragon 888 chipset. On the camera front, the Realme GT 2 retains the 50MP primary sensor and the macro sensor but opts for an 8MP ultra-wide camera. Barring these differences, the Realme GT 2 is identical to its more powerful sibling in most regards.

Pricing & Availability

The Realme GT 2 series is launching first in China. Preorders start from tonight, with official sales kicking off from Jan 7. The company hasn’t detailed any plans for a global release just yet.
